"Meanwhile, the later year groupings
turned up other interesting diversions. In the “1959-1963” box Carl had purchased a set of heads from a member of
the Hot Rod, “Kustom Kulture” scene: of the five heads only one was real, a
bald tsantsa that had been used as
the gear shifter for some souped-up jalopy and had been ground into
disfigurement, along with the gears. Because Carl had bought these sight-unseen
though the post, the other four turned out to be classic fakes, made of
polyvinyl-chloride, with neon-coloured plastic hair, designed to swing from
rear-vision mirrors. One of them was simply a resin cast image of Ed “Big
Daddy” Roth’s cartoon creation, Rat Fink, with its eyes sewn shut. These
inevitably found their way about the lab, swinging from the handles of the
computer memory cabinets, or from the bench-top gas taps..."
