Legendary Schism...

MATTINGLEY, Christobel (Carol McLEAN-CARR, illus.), McGruer and the Goat, Angus & Robertson Publishers, North Ryde, NSW, Australia, 1987.

Octavo; hardcover; 38pp., with many black & white illustrations. Minor scuffing to the board edges; light scattered foxing throughout. Dustwrapper edgeworn with mild sunning to the spine. Good.

As far as I can tell, there must have been some kind of religious schism in Innsmouth at some point, wherein a breakaway section of the community began to worship Shub Niggurath. Obviously this was a long time ago, and the facts of the matter have passed into legend and are now transmitted by means of childrens' stories.

Some obvious errors have, of course, crept in: that's not a Black Goat, for instance.

The substance of the tale involves discord between "Mrs Dumpling" and "Captain Duff" over concerns to do with the Goat, all of which are resolved by the multi-dextrous interventions of a beneficent "octopus" with the mouth-bending name "McGruer".

I don't know about you, but as far as I'm concerned, this is practically a religious tract!
